Don Johnson on the 1963 B record run (March,1995)
"The record run: Down leg was just fine very smooth. Killed a spark plug, pulled the pan down and saw no damage. If I remember we ran over 265 on this leg. The return was less than desirable. Questionable wind conditions and a lot of throttling. Finally burned a piston about 1/4 mile from end and coasted to the average"
1963 B Class two way average: 255.501 MPH

Jeff Shipley on the 1963 B record run (March, 1995)
We went to Bonneville in August 1963 with great hopes to break Tom Beatty's record (of 229, I think). We had problems! My motor would either burn pistons or not get out of it's way because it was so rich. With help from Art Chrisman, we changed the water flow through the engine, and then it ran horribly rich. I kept leaning it and finally just added nitro to lean it out. 20% may be a correct number. We made a one way of 259.62 MPH to qualify. (I found the trophy). The rear end got extremely hot, due to the 4:11 ring and pinion causing a 12,000 RPM speed. I detuned the engine to save the rear end and assure us of a record. We went two ways the next morning for the 255 record."
